Photoelectric eyes, or sensors, are an important feature for garage door safety in Arizona. But as useful as they are, are you required to have garage door sensors on Phoenix, AZ, garage doors or anywhere else? Here’s what you need to know about garage door sensors.

What Are Garage Door Sensors?

Photoelectric eye sensors are a simple device installed at the bottom of your garage door. Their purpose is to prevent the door from coming down on someone or something underneath it, potentially causing serious damage or injury. A garage door can weigh 400 pounds or more, so it could easily crush something if it came all the way down without anything to stop it.

The photoelectric eye sensors sit opposite each other, with the garage door in between them. When the door is up, a laser connects the two eyes. When the door lowers, as long as there is nothing breaking that laser connection, it will come down with no problem. However, anything that does break that connection, like a child walking under the garage door, will cause the door to stop and reverse itself, preventing an accident.

Requirements for Garage Door Sensors in Scottsdale and Throughout AZ

This is obviously a very useful safety feature, but it is optional? Can you decline it if you don’t want to pay for garage door sensors in Gilbert, Tempe or Phoenix? The answer is no. You cannot decline garage door sensors anywhere in the United States.

Since 1993, U.S. Federal Law UL 325 has required all garage doors manufactured include a safety-reversing system such as garage door sensors. Technically, there are other devices that provide adequate garage door safety for Gilbert, Scottsdale or Phoenix garage doors, but sensors are the most common. At any rate, you must have an approved safety device on your garage door.
